NEWB vs. nOOb
Since you are here, you probably have been to a neoboard. The word "nOOb" has probably been mentioned. At first, you are going to think: "That is very unkind how people tease newbies like that. It isn't THEIR fault they dont know anything about neopets! They are new!"- but really, n00bs and newbies are NOT the same things. You will now learn what differences, so you can avoid being reported.
First, the definitions.
newbie: A person who is new to neopets. They do not know anything, and are completley innocent. If you see them on the boards, you will know if they are a newbie or not.
n00b: An airheaded, evil, inconsiderate, selfish, greedy, scamming, neopian-A.K.A pure evil beggar/spammer.
nOObs
-thay uslly spel evrting rng so u cnt undrstnd wot dey sey nd dey us chtspk wch iz a ded givewy.
Translation: They usually spell everything wrong so you can't understand what they say and they use chatspeak which is a DEAD giveaway.
Misuse of spelling and grammar and use of chatspeak make it pretty obvious that the person is a nOOb.
Most of the time, newbies arent n00bs. Except for the really dumb evil greedy ones. Yes, they CAN be the same thing, but not all the time.....so DON'T say that immediatly.
-n00bs usually beg and beg and beg and beg and spam and spam and scam and scam and...you get the point.
Hlp mi acount wos frozin and i hav no neopoints!!, my mom has brest canser and can only b curd from a peintbrush!(or scamming you into it.)
if you by dis pile of dung for 1000 nps i wil giv u a stary peintbrush, omgomgomg dont u want 1 u r soooo luky 2 hav mee az a bf.
Riiight...I believe you...
Ahh...a classic.
Lyk omg! if yu jion mi gild i wil giv u 1900000000000000 nps and dobel de setz of codstonz and boteled farys and ptpts and a mootiks and peintbreshes and more so join today!
uh huh.....suuuure....
Newbies usually confusedly ask you questions like "how do you get neopoints?" or "how do you make a shop?" They usually ask innocent questions that dont involve giving away neopoints or bribery. Newbies won't ever bribe you-- just ask questions because they need help to know how to play neopets.
n00b: Cen u giv me all yur nps pleeze i promice i wl giv them all bakc~
newbie: How do you get neopoints?
That is a great way to distinguish n00b from newbie.
newbie: whats a paintbrush and how much neopoints does it cost? Oh, and how do you get one?
n00b: plz cn i hv a peintbrush NOW if u dnt gv it 2 me ur getin frozin!
N00bs love reporting people. They live for it because they get to be even more of an airhead, and it heightens their low self-esteem. Newbies dont even know HOW to report people! So if someone reports you for the dumbest reason, like the one below, then (take my word for it) you can consider them a n00b.
n00b: pleze give me a peintbrush?
me: no, sorry i cant afford it....
n00b: REPERTOED!u r sooooo meen im a por sad prsn nd i ned nps and stuff nd u wont gimme! *cry* I HATE you! I hate you and when i see u I wana hrt u!
o.k., I admit, I went a lit-tle far with that?
Newbies are perfectly confident with themselves and prefer not to go around begging for neopoints because they are sure that they are worthy to earn neopoints, and set a nice, sensible goal, like first 10,000 np... Newbies ask "how" questions, n00bs ask "can you plz gimme?" questions. Newbies are quite sure of themselves, they just need a little guidance on how to reach their goals and accomplish things THEMSELVES(key word), while n00bs like people doing it for them. They want the easy, cheating, lazy way to do things.. Newbies want your advice, help, and guidance, but nOObs just want your items and neopoints. It's that simple!
n00bs also clutter the boards with useless topics that nobody could care less about like "omgomgomgomgomg!!" or "i just ate a cookie!" or "if u cn rd dis dn u gt 1000 nps nd a pb" or "Ugh I hate _____ user". Just ignore those boards, because the more you post on them to tell them to shut up, and that you reported them, the higher the board will be on the list. A great way to rid neopia of those useless boards is to just INGORE them!!
Belive it or not, if you are reporting someone on the boards then do not make it clear that you have, or are GOING to report them. They will be looking for you, and you will be on their "list", so beware...
n00bs always say things like "cn i hv ur peintbrush il giv it bk i promice!" Hey, come ON...do you really trust them? Look, they may not SEEM it, but they ARE smart enough to know that you can't "borrow" a paintbrush and give it back! They are just playing dumb. A n00b's main purpose in life is to annoy you like crazy until you self destruct and start swearing in a different spelling...(a good reason to report you) and give them all your neopoints. But, they're too dumb to know that that can't happen... so they just keep annoying you, and spamming and scamming the boards so EVERYONE gives up.
Some of the people I know have been frozen because of a nOOb- in one case, one of the people got nothing in thier neomail except spam from n00bs. The consequences? They blew up, went crazy mad at the nOOb, and the nOOb reported them for being mean. Personally, many nOObs have neomailed me spam-
Short/Stupid
Pointless
Annoying
Messages
Like asking for neopoints or to join their guild even though I made it real CLEAR on my userlookup NEVER to send me guild invites. I also get stupid neomails from people I dont know that say: "can you give me your msn name? do you have aim i want to add you!" No, I do not have msn OR aim but I couldn't have very well REPLIED, could I? Those people probably do not have many friends and want to brag about their long contact list... of other nOObs, people they have the e-mail of from forwarded messages, or imaginary people!! Just delete those neomails and NEVER reply them because that will encourage them to send you more spam. If you ignore them, they'll just go onto the next person and forget all about you... which is exactly what you want. Also, when a random person you don't know asks you to be their neofriend, I suggest you reject them, because it can lead to trouble. Dont worry, rejecting them is not mean. Its their fault for requesting to be neofriends with people you dont know.
Okay, now here is a neo-mail or a neo-board topic that comes up quite often. "My pet is dieng and needs food!" Most of the time you can tell by the spelling... but then again, it could be a bad-spelling nOObs or a newbie who just accidentally pressed the wrong button on their keyboard. It is also hard to tell it its a newbie who just wants to know how to "save her/his pet from dying" or a n00b who just wants your items to sell in his/her shop to get neopoints. A great way to deal with this is to reply to them kindly, saying something like "Neopets dont die. They never ever will. So it is not essential to feed them." Some people are under 13, and they would probably be HEARTBROKEN if one of their pets died. Also, it is quite a horrid subject! If it is a newbie, she/he'll understand. He/she will probably say something like "Thank you" or "That is a relief" or "Good, another thing to store in my neopets knowledge!?" At the most, he/she will definitely reply, because they are kind people.
To sum it all up, n00bs have bad intentions, newbies have good intentions-or they do not know what to do next and are wandering aimlessly around the boards. If you REALLY want to be able to differentiate between the two without getting confused, prounounce n00bs "noobs" and newbies "noobies", not "newbs". That easy.
I think the best thing to do on neopets to avoid run-ins with n00bs is to trust your gut and use logic. And the old saying, "if its too good to be true, it probably is" couldn't be any true-er. Even The Neopets Team (TNT) says that! The best thing to do when you encounter a n00b is to ignore them. The best thing to do to a newbie is to help them. Not by giving them neopoints, but by giving them advice, guidance, and/or links where they can GET more help. Who knows maybe when your advice makes them successful they may return the favour...
